A Perspective On Life……

Misty morning, garam chai and biting cold…familiar weather for all north Indians:)

This beautiful weather got me thinking of perspective towards life. I called up a friend to just casually chat up and talk about the pleasant weather.  But I was in for a surprise. Hi Sumi, what a miserable weather it is ….ouch ..huh!… miserable!!!. And before I could even open my mouth..the rant continued. It’s raining, it’s so cold, the laundry isn’t drying the food delivery guys are charging a bomb, what depressing weather..I hate cold.. I hate rain.. I hate this, I hate that and well aaaaannnnnndddd it just went on and on and on and on..whew!

This exchange got me thinking..is it the weather or the cold or the rain or the food …what is the complaint all about? One cannot be unhappy about just about everything. I tried to change the mood by asking her about her work, the dress she wanted to buy, samosas that I was fantasizing about…all random topics to distract her and but well to no avail. I found an excuse to disconnect the call and phew what a relief.

This uncomfortable conversation got me thinking. Our reaction to external stimuli depends on the way we perceive things. Let’s just talk about rain for instance… the pleasant gurgling sound of water, the clear blue skies, the greenery all around.  Everything washed and laundered by mother earth looking all shining and inviting. Having a chai and samosa..relaxing with subtle music in the background..ah ..heaven.

Now that is how I look at it; it’s the way I, as an individual, perceive rain. Am I devoid of stress, problems, anxieties, concerns? No! As an overly emotional Cancerian, I am more prone to overthinking and depressive thoughts than an average human. Small things tend to affect me emotionally and make me morose.

Life is a quagmire interspersed with peaks and troughs. Overthinking won’t set anything right. As humans we are pessimists and always imagine the worst. So why dwell over the future, play and replay depressing scenarios and get dejected for stuff that is a figment of our imagination?

Sit back, relax and smell the flowers. Make a conscious decision to be happy and to avoid overthinking. Work on cultivating a mindset of enjoying small pleasures of life.

Have that samosa, listen to your favourite song, buy the dress that you wanted, sit back and just look at the rain. Hey this is your life, it’s a gift from God. No one is getting out of here alive, so enjoy this rollercoaster till it lasts.

Wise men say that a human life is given as gift by God to cherish and enjoy. So hey! Do so and when its time to say goodbye to life, you should be euphoric saying… yay yay yay what a ride!!! rather than lamenting on unfulfilled desires and shattered dreams.

Smile, laugh, travel, read, make friends…do all that makes you happy. Make a conscious decision to LIVE and not just EXIST. So enjoy the simple pleasures of your existence, take a deep breath and smile….. 😎
